ORC Spring 2020! Home Office Makeover Week 1

| |

Week 1 is in full swing for the One Room Challenge! Learn how we will take a bare home office and turn it into something to talk about! The home office makeover starts now!

I am so excited!! It’s time for the One Room Challenge and our new home office is in desperate shape. We took a leap of faith and made a big move to North Texas from South Texas. You may not think that is a big deal unless you live in the great state of Texas and know how very big our state is.  I am working on putting all of our move sagas into posts but for now, let’s concentrate on the behemoth at hand.

If you are new to The Aspiring Home, here’s a big gigantic “Hello” and “Welcome” from me! I am so very glad you are here. This year has been hovering in the Twilight Zone but I have hopes that it will find its way back to a form of normal.

Participating in the One Room Challenge is one way to move back to the norm. The One Room Challenge takes place twice a year, Spring and Fall.

Usually, the challenge lasts for 6 weeks but given the kind of crazy that has been happening, it has been extended to 8 weeks.

Boy, am I glad! I have some hefty ambitions over here and I would like to complete it before the buzzer sounds.

This is week ONE and I am going to introduce you to our little candidate and share the master plan.

So, what is it about the home office that needs some serious love and support? Well, it’s not only devoid of a real work environment it is home to several moving boxes, leftover bookshelves, makeshift desks, stacks of artwork, and photos.

The list goes on but I won’t, your welcome. We’re friends now and I want to keep it that way.

This office space is quite a bit smaller than our last office so extra tweaking has to be done. No complaints, just the opportunity to rethink current items and hunt for reasonable options to fill in the blanks.

Let’s take a look at a few before photos shall we? Just for grins.

We love the anticipation that comes with the plan reveal! So without further ado, may I present to you our new office!

I can’t wait to dig in. Here’s the game plan overview:

The Bookshelves-

We will reuse bookshelves we own and build additional bookshelves to fill in one of the walls. These bookshelves will go to the ceiling and fingers crossed -I will be able to install a library ladder (I have always wanted one). We have a lot of books and I kinda would like to have space to add a few pretty things too.

The Walls-

The other walls will get some serious love – we will be adding traditional molding.

The Ceiling-

The ceiling aka the 5th wall WILL NOT be left out. I’m all about inclusivity here. I will be adding a cool DIY ceiling medallion worthy of that light fixture and the ceiling will get a splash of color! Surprised, huh? I know not really. HA!

The Furniture-

I am hoping to reupholster and reuse a few things we have but we will see. Trying to keep this makeover budget-friendly. I already own that beautiful desk so, yay me!

The Textiles-

I am still feeling my way through this one, I know I want to incorporate a houndstooth pattern and a monogram or two (it’s just time, y’all)

The Paint-

So to keep this office from feeling “closed in” I am going to paint the walls and built-ins the same color that is in there now, Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray. I am all for bold color but the more I ponder this room – the more I feel it is the right color.

BUT

I will be adding a dose of color to the ceiling with Sherwin Williams Aqua Sphere

The Lighting-

Right now this room has the standard boring light fixture and I am hoping beyond hope that I can get the beauty you see in the mood board to take up residence in our home office. I will also add lighting above the library wall as well.
