Christmas Gift Exchange Game

Instructions:

Exchange #1 – Host/Hostess -As each guest arrives, trade gifts with them. Host/Hostess will exchange the guest gift with a small wrapped box. This small wrapped box contains a number inside. Create as many small boxes as you have guests.  Host/Hostess – Add a number to the guests’ gifts.  Place Guests’ gifts under the tree.

Exchange #2- Host/Hostess gather the group and create a circle. Hold a jar or bowl filled with “directions”. As you call out the different directions, guests will move their small box around the circle. Example: Host/hostess calls out “left” -all guest hand their small box to the person on their left.

Exchange #3 –  Host/Hostess adds a specially wrapped small box into the mix, this box contains the host/hostess gift number for their gift contribution for the game.  Host/Hostess plays a favorite Christmas song and institutes the rules of “Hot Potato”. Once the song stops at the discretion of the host/hostess, the person with the specially wrapped gift has a choice to make. To keep the specially wrapped gift or the small original gift. Once a choice is made, take the box not chosen out of the mix.

Exchange #4 – Host/Hostess last call. Allow guests to exchange amongst themselves for 1 minute or hold onto their small box. The specially wrapped gift may be included in this round. After the minute is over – everyone keeps their small box.

The Reveal! – Allow guest to open their small box to reveal the gift number. Guests may now grab the coordinating gift to open.

Continue the game – if you the group desires, the rules of “Dirty Santa” can be instituted once all gifts have been revealed.

  1. I’m almost embarrassed to say that I’ve only played the white elephant game once in my 60+ years. I definitely want to change that this holiday season, where it’s even more important to laugh and have fun. I’m going to arrange for my family to play this after Christmas dinner. Can’t wait!

  2. I never would have thought about the variations in the gift exchange game that you have. Thanks so much for the ideas. Sounds so fun.
