3 Important Bathroom Renovation Details to Include During Renovation
Updating your bathroom includes more than just the pretty things. Here are 3 important bathroom renovation details you are going to want to think about before demo day.
I love this Question and Answer series. The original question comes from my Instagram page, @theaspiringhome_ Sometimes we get so excited about how beautiful our new bathroom will be that lighting can be overlooked.
Such a good question.
The short answer? Bathrooms are tricky and need a layered light plan for the best possible outcome. But if budget is tight, strategic light and using daylight bulbs will go a long way.
The longer answer? Build your lighting in layers.
Natural light – do you have it?
When is it at its best (this will depend the location of your bathroom, get the compass (app) out)?
What time do you start getting ready for your day?
When do you begin your evening routine? Write down the time and how the natural light affects or doesn’t affect your bathroom. Is it cave-like at the wrong times? This is when we have to help Mother Nature out.
Do you have recessed lights in your bathroom?
If no, well we need to add a few. If yes, flip the switch on… do you see areas of shadow, chances are the light placement wasn’t considered when the builder added. Take pictures and take notes. The recessed lights will need to be moved and you may need to add a few. HINT: many older homes need an additional recessed light over the tub and shower area.
Do you do your make up at your sink area?
Vertical vanity lights that wash the mirror in soft light or replacing the current builder grade sheet mirror with a back and front lit version would be ideal. This of it as a giant makeup mirror. If the budget doesn’t allow – find the best for your budget extendable arm make-up light.
Magnification mirrors are so helpful and you may want one in addition to the backlit version if “getting up close and personal” is necessary for tired or weary eyes (We also call this type task lighting).
BONUS:
Dreaming of a SPA like bathroom, decorative and accent lighting will get you there. Pretty chandeliers, sconces, even picture lights hung over artwork will give you the chic feeling you are after.
We have our layers, let’s make switches convenient. Task lighting switches if possible should be near the task area. Can light and chandelier switches should be positioned near the entrance to the room.
Final suggestions? I would say, choose your bulbs wisely, add dimmers, and look for lights that can be used in damp areas- especially for those of you who like to steam up the mirrors.
